What Is Stucco Work?
Stucco is a cement-based exterior finish applied in layers over a wall surface, traditionally over brick, masonry, or wire lath. It is one of the oldest exterior finishes in use, going back centuries, and in NYC, it shows up in two main forms. The first is traditional three-coat stucco on masonry buildings, where it acts as a weather barrier and a decorative finish. The second is brownstone stucco resurfacing, where a specialized cementitious coating is applied over failing original brownstone to restore the look while sealing the wall. Both call for skilled hands. Stucco that goes on too fast, in the wrong weather, or over an unprepared surface will crack, delaminate, and trap moisture inside the wall.
